Kiai is just the name of the scream. Many people try to articulate the word “kiai” with their lips....

So how should a great kiai sound, then?

Kiai is always a personal shout. The only one who looks silly in a dojo is the person who doesn’t scream.

Some scream “eei!”, some scream “yaa!”, some scream “ooh!”,  some scream “heip!”, some scream “kihap!”, some scream “ki up!”. But the sound coming out of your mouth is actually secondary.

Focus on the breathing....
